Founded in February of 2014, Adopt A Mutt has always maintained the focus of quality over quantity. Remaining small through out the years has allowed each dog to receive the attention, care and training they deserve to make them great companions as they transition to their adoptive homes. Over the years, the rescue has evolved from general surrenders to focusing on medical cases, primarily neonates. This is a niche that clearly needed to be filled and Adopt A Mutt is proud of all the little ones that are living full lives because someone reached out for help!

Who runs Adopt A Mutt?

This rescue was founded and is run by myself, Sam Kannegiesser but it truly is a community and family affair to keep the rescue operating. With over a decade of rescue experience, every day is a chance to learn something new to continue to make positive change. I live with my own seven dogs who live full lives of daily hikes, ongoing classes and learning along with competitive dog sports including agility, scentwork, trick training and most recently rally classes.

I believe dogs deserve the best while in care. Years of dog ownership and training has led me into dog sports with my own dogs and from there it was natural transition into dog training. I follow the most progressive and science based positive training methods with both my own dogs and my rescue dogs. I am proudly employed by PAWsitively Social Canine Adventures where I teach Puppy Classes, Agility and a variety of specialty classes as I complete my apprenticeship to write my Certified Professional Dog Trainer exam.

Additionally, I am an alumni of Trish McMillan's Shelter Dog Mentorship, Fenzi Dog Sports Academy and Susan Garrett's Handling 360 and Agility Nation. To further learning, I have attended The Aggression in Dogs Conference and The Lemonade Conference 1 & 2 and am registered for 3. To further myself as a dog owner and foster/rescue coordinator, I have also attended numerous webinars and workshops on aggression, behaviour, cooperative care and more from the top trainers in the world including Deb Jones PhD, Chirag Patel, Chris Pachel, Trish McMillan, Eva Bertilsson and more.

To adopt a dog from Adopt A Mutt is not just any dog. You will receive a dog who has had the unique opportunity to be exposed to some of the most progressive training methods with influences from experts in their field.
