The Mutt Fund

One of the biggest challenges currently facing pet owners is being able to cover the cost of unexpected veterinary bills. While everyone should have a plan in place, the reality is very few people can be prepared for thousands of dollars of bills to save their family member. This often leaves them stuck between surrendering their pet or euthanizing.

Surrender has never sat well with this rescue.
The chain is that the owner surrenders their pet, the rescue fundraises to cover the bills and someone else adopts  for the current adoption fee. The assumption is that new family will be more prepared for anything that comes up, but if the past two years have taught us anything, it is that nothing is guaranteed.

This is where The Mutt Fund comes in. As this rescue has moved away from high intake and focusing strictly on neonatal/pediatric emergencies, we would like to continue to work in the community to keep pets with their families. The fund will be available on a nomination basis for anyone who is struggling with an unexpected veterinary bill.

A few reasons we are seeing for increased requests for surrender due to unexpected veterinary bills:
  • employment/income loss due to the pandemic
  • increased wait times for appointments due to the nationwide shortage of veterinary professionals
    • this means what was a minor issue may be a major issue by the time the appointment arrives
  • lack of annual vet checks being offered as vets attempt to catch up from the lockdown backlogs
    • this can result in issues going undetected due to a lack of hands on exams by a professional
  • pet insurance which was once affordable now begins at well over $100 for a young, healthy pet

the mutt fund terms and conditions

  • Financial Assistance will be available as our fund allows to cover a portion of an unexpected veterinary visit.
  • Conditions which will not be eligible for assistance:
    • routine vet visits such as vaccines/bloodwork/parasite control
    • accidents which are the direct result of negligence
    • complications resulting from unplanned or planned pregnancy
  • There is no application process. This is strictly a nomination fund where someone can recognize an individual or family struggling to pay for a beloved pet's unexpected visit and submit a request.
  • A copy of the estimate is required before a donation will be received.
  • Payments will only be made directly to the account at the veterinary clinic providing care.

This program will officially launch march 1st.
